How to start a group

IF YOU'RE STARTING A NEW GROUP TO BUILD A SAFE COMMUNITY, THIS IS WHERE YOU BEGIN.

The map doesn't show a local group near you? No problem!

You can start your own SAFE group with help from Stand.earth.

Step 1 is to gather your people.

Appreciate who you have:

  • Make a list of who is with you in wanting to create SAFE policies in your community, even if it's a list of one to start.
  • Along with the names of the people, note what knowledge, skills, and community relationships they can contribute.

Step 2 is to start planning how to grow your group and your voice.

Acknowledge who you don't have:

  • Make a list again, this time of who is missing.
  • Who are the people you can bring together to include the diversity of your community and round out your knowledge, skills, and community relationships? It's essential to include representatives of the people and neighborhoods most impacted by the fossil fuel industry, such as Black people, Indigenous people, people of color, and people with lower incomes. Workers, business owners, labor union leaders, environmental, environmental justice, and social justice leaders, and leaders from religious and civic organizations are also key participants in your effort.
  • Develop a plan for how you'll make working together a real partnership, where all are welcome, heard, and valued, and make space for new partners to shape that plan as well as shape the group.
  • Consider who in your group already has a relationship with the people and organizations you need to connect with.
  • Decide who will reach out to them about working together.

Step 3 is to connect with us at Stand.earth if you haven't already.
