Canada must increase its climate ambition

It’s time for Trudeau's government to stop making excuses and move forward with meaningful climate ambition.

Just 11 years. That’s how long climate scientists are saying we have left to transform our entire economy if we want to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. And in order to get there, we simply don’t have room to build a single new oil and gas megaproject. Not the Trans Mountain pipeline, not LNG or fracking projects, not the Teck Frontier mine. Nada, not one.

We also can’t keep giving away billions in subsidies to the oil and gas industry (that one’s a no brainer). Instead, it’s time to invest in a new clean economy by building renewable energy projects and electrifying our transportation infrastructure. By making these investments now, we can turn this crisis into an opportunity to create a more equal society where everyone has access to affordable clean energy.

The massive societal transformation that we need to truly tackle climate change – while fighting against entrenched fossil fuel interests that want to move us backward – is a daunting task. But massive changes can and do happen very quickly when there's vision, leadership and determination.

Will you join us and send a message to Trudeau and his cabinet?

Trudeau: it’s your responsibility to make Canada a climate leader by saying goodbye to fossil fuels and investing in the new economy, starting TODAY.

Petition to Trudeau's federal cabinet

Dear members of cabinet,

Just 11 years. That is how long we have to get our climate emissions under control if we want to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. That’s according to the latest science report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Much more ambitious climate policy is necessary to meet the very urgent crisis we are facing. Emissions of the oil and gas sectors continues to grow at an alarming rate while other sectors of the economy have made positive steps to reduce their emissions. That means that steps must be taken to reduce the emissions of the oil and gas sector through tougher regulations, a tool which will lead to a quicker reduction in emissions.

It also means that you must immediately stop giving the oil and gas industry billions and billions of tax breaks and other subsidies. You promised during the 2015 campaign to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies. Canadians cannot build a clean economy if you keep propping up the dirty economy with public money.

Instead, it’s time to invest in a new clean economy by building renewable energy projects and electrifying our transportation infrastructure. By making these investments now, we can turn this crisis into an opportunity to create a more equal society where everyone has access to affordable clean energy. Historically, Canada has played an outsized role in leading the world community. Whether it was peacekeeping, banning landmines, or protecting the ozone layer, we have, time and time again, stepped up and been leaders when other nations have been unwilling or unable. Climate change is the greatest threat we have ever faced. Real climate leadership from Canada is needed now more than ever.

Now is the time for Canada to take its place as an ambitious climate leader.
