Travis Nichols joins the team to help steer institutional communications and scale up organization’s profile

SAN FRANCISCO —  International environmental advocacy organization Stand.earth is pleased to announce that Travis Nichols has joined its growing team as Communications Director.

Nichols will steer institutional communications to scale up Stand.earth’s public profile, in close partnership with Chief Communications Officer Sohini Baliga. He comes to Stand.earth with an extensive background in environmental communications and campaigning, as well as deep roots in the nonprofit and writing worlds.

Prior to joining Stand.earth, Nichols worked for nearly a decade at Greenpeace USA and Greenpeace International, leading on communications for its Arctic, Oceans & Climate Programs, as well as the Fire Drill Fridays collaboration with Jane Fonda. He has deep experience developing and implementing overarching strategic communications plans, working across departments to find and develop new audiences, and managing all aspects of media work from communications strategies to social media, press releases, and op-eds.

Nichols is also a fiction writer and poet who has worked as an editor at the Poetry Foundation, manager of the Wave Books Poetry Bus Tour, and co-curator for the Poets On Painters exhibit at the Ulrich Museum of Art. He has worked as a reporter and freelance writer for the Washington Post, HuffPo, The Believer, and many other outlets.

“A better world can feel like an impossibility. The corporations, industries, and governments in charge have more money and power than ever have before, and they use all of it to make people feel like despair is the only option. But Stand.earth believes change is not only possible — despite the seemingly insurmountable odds — but inevitable,” said Nichols. “That’s why I’m thrilled to be part of this organization. I believe we can do what has never been done before, what some say can’t happen, and what corporations, industries, and governments want us to believe is impossible, which is to build a future that puts protection over profit, and people over systems of degradation. I can’t wait to get started.”
